Why I Write
"Instruction and Amusement are more blended than the world in general is apt to imagine. Uninstructive amusement may be afforded for a moment by a passing jest or a ludicrous anecdote, by which no knowledge is conveyed to the mind of the hearer or the reader, but the man who would amuse others for an hour, either by his writing or his conversation, must tell his hearers or his readers something that they do not know, or suggest to them some new reflexion upon the knowledge they have previously acquired. The more the knowledge bears upon their pursuits, upon their occupations, or upon their interests, the more attractive it will be, and the more entitled to be called useful."

Eat Here - Get Gas
Allegany, NY - Boonville, MO -
Greenville, IL - Grove City, PA - Lynnville, IN -
New Castle, IN - Newtown, CT - Schodack, NY - Springfield, OH
On a recent 3200 mile road trip, my wife and I committed to not eating fast food nor stopping at any chain restaurants. It took a little effort, but paid off with big dividends. Every meal was unique, the food well prepared, the menus varied, and each of the wait staff was an individual, not an automaton asking if we wanted to supersize our order.
We got off the interstate for each meal, which took both time and energy, but we were rewarded with unique locales, friendly service, great food, and a glimpse of small town America clearly lacking at highway interchanges. Face it - a Wendy's in Portland, ME looks the same as one in Portland, OR and, while there's some sort of safety in familiarity, every one of our meals was a positive adventure and a break from the monotony of the road.
From now on, you can guess where and how we'll be eating. Go ahead - try it out - live a little !
